Conservation of the night sky, energy efficiency, and safety — the three pillars that, perfectly combined, place Vimbodí i Poblet at the forefront of public lighting

WITHIN THE PROVINCE OF TARRAGONA, IN A PLACE WHERE NATURE AND HISTORY GO HAND IN HAND, LIES THE MUNICIPALITY OF VIMBODÍ I POBLET — AN EXCEPTIONAL DESTINATION FOR TOURISM, CAPTIVATED BY THE ROYAL MONASTERY OF POBLET AND ITS NATURAL ENVIRONMENT SURROUNDED BY LUSH FORESTS AND NATIONAL PARKS OF GREAT ENVIRONMENTAL VALUE.

Vimbodí i Poblet is part of the Parc Natural de la Serra de Montsant, classified under the highest protection category against light pollution (E1).
The quality of its night sky earned it official recognition in 2020 by the Government of Catalonia, which designated it as a Protected Night Environment Area.
This unique characteristic has defined the action plan for the public lighting renovation project in the municipality.

Operating within such a framework could have posed a complex challenge, but coordination between the three agents involved has been exemplary, allowing for a smooth execution of the project’s roadmap.
On one hand, the engineering firm responsible for assessing the current lighting conditions and developing a photometric plan was Global Efficient Energy, working jointly with EnergyTAS in Catalonia.
Founded in 2015, the engineering company has led comprehensive energy efficiency projects in the field of public lighting — notably the ESE Montblanc project in Tarragona, recognized for its striking visual results and comparable technical complexity to the Vimbodí i Poblet project.

The Municipality of Vimbodí i Poblet, like hundreds of others across Spain, was in a state of neglect regarding its lighting system: inefficient, highly polluting, and non-compliant with current photometric regulations, posing risks to residents and visitors alike.
The project was not an easy one — beyond improving efficiency, it required meticulous attention to light pollution control.
The new luminaires had to strictly comply with regulatory standards while also preserving the natural night sky.

Nearly five hundred lighting points were replaced with new LED technology luminaires.
Televés was the manufacturer responsible for supplying the new equipment.
Thanks to its extensive expertise in electronic technology and metal structure manufacturing, Televés developed highly specialized LED lighting solutions ideally suited for the needs of a municipality with such unique environmental conditions.
What could have been a limitation for other manufacturers was not the case here: through its Cies and Villas luminaires, with a Super Warm 2,200K color temperature (certified by the Canary Islands Astrophysics Institute), Televés met the municipality’s goal of achieving properly regulated street lighting while adhering to night-sky protection standards — and, crucially, ensuring public safety.

Both the Villas luminaires, made of aluminum, and the Cies models, made of technical polymer, were complemented with UVAX PLC remote management nodes, allowing real-time monitoring and resulting in significant energy savings.
At the same time, the eight municipal control cabinets were modernized — their damaged structures were repaired, and a smart control system was implemented.

The project’s investment totaled €250,316.54, with ImesAPI serving as the Energy Services Company (ESE) responsible for all project management and funding.
Its SIGMA platform for comprehensive lighting management integrates GIS capabilities, remote control, maintenance operations, and energy management modules, enabling the municipality to achieve a remarkable energy reduction — from 274,697.44 kWh to 67,952.98 kWh — which in turn translates into substantial cost savings for the local government.

This complete lighting renovation represents not only a major step toward environmental protection and sustainability, but also a tangible reduction of 61.64 tons of CO₂ emissions into the atmosphere.

The excellent collaboration among all three project partners has been key to its success.
A perfect combination of power, color temperature, uniformity, performance, and energy efficiency positioned the Vimbodí i Poblet lighting project as a benchmark success story for the engineering firm, the manufacturer, and the energy services company alike.

Although not one of the largest projects ever undertaken, it was certainly one of the most challenging, due to its environmental restrictions and technical complexity.
Nonetheless, through coordination and mutual understanding, all parties ensured that the project was completed successfully and with outstanding results.
